This oversized drop-shoulder tee features a digital collage that sets Caravaggio’s screaming Medusa at the center of an ancient Roman floor mosaic. She takes the place of the serene, upturned Medusa who once lay there to be walked over. Perseus could only face her through the reflection in his polished shield. Caravaggio painted her onto a shield. This design reproduces that reflection once more: a copy of a copy of a mirror image. Rendered in heavy print grain, the graphic doesn’t hide that it’s a reproduction.

Western art has long arranged women to be looked at, posed for the pleasure of a spectator assumed to be male. Medusa is the one figure that order could never fully contain. She is a woman whose own gaze is the threat, and her myth is a series of men finding ways to look at her without consequence. By many accounts Caravaggio used his own face, so the painting shows the male gaze confronting its fear of being seen. This design trades the decorative beauty of the mosaic for the scream, taking Medusa back from ornament and restoring her as a force.

The graphic lifts the olive ground of Caravaggio’s shield and pushes it into a luminous green, so the face takes on the color of the surface it was painted on, set against deep plum shadow. The Roman floor stays in the muted tones of the archive while Medusa glows as if lit by a screen, an ancient image surfacing through the modern feed. Her green recalls the phosphor of night vision, the technology of looking without being seen, which is Perseus’s own strategy turned into hardware. Worn on the chest, the image returns to its oldest use. Athena carried Medusa’s head on her aegis, and Greek and Roman soldiers bore it on their armor to turn harm away. Anyone whose eyes land there meets the scream. The soft, oversized fit offers a relaxed structure against the intensity of the graphic.
